Richardson ISD is transforming its education system by turning all its junior high school campuses into middle schools within the next seven years. The purpose of the project is to move the district’s sixth graders from the elementary schools they attend into the new middle schools. The junior high campuses were used only for grades seven and eight.

September 7, 2022, RISD trustees, Superintendent Tabitha Branum and Principal Nick Rustin joined students in the Class of 2031 at the groundbreaking for the new Lake Highlands Middle School. These students will be the first sixth graders to use the new facility in the fall of 2024.

Dallas City Council Member Adam McGough and representatives from architectural firm Perkins & Will and Cadence McShane construction company were also on hand for the groundbreaking.

With the passage of Bond 2021, RISD voters provided the funding mechanisms for the district to begin the construction projects necessary for the middle school transformation.
